Treasure of Dali Shar Pei

Traditioneller Bone Mouth

Dragon Gate Lucky

Traditional Bone Mouth

The Traditional Bone Mouth Shar Pei was never a luxury dog, he was held mainly by small farmers as a hunting and guard dog (working dog).

Used as a versatile working dog, the Bone Mouth Shar Pei had to be agile and not be hindered by excessive wrinkles.

The adult Bone Mouth Shar Pei should have little wrinkles mainly on the forehead and some wrinkles on the neck and withers.

The coat is short and bristly and is referred to as "horse coat".

Flaschenkürbis

Ein birnenförmiger Flaschenkürbis hat dem Traditionellen Bone Mouth Shar Pei Kopf seinen Namen gegeben.

Calabash Frucht / fruit

Calabash

Calabash refers to the fruit of a vinery plant grown in Asia (Cantonese "Wu lo"). In China, "Wu lo" comes in two variety: one type has a very defined central constriction (bottle gourd) and the other a pear shaped fruit.

The head of the Traditional Bone Mouth Shar Pei got his name from a pear-shaped gourd -> calabash head (Wu Lo tau) !

The comparison is quite straight forward.

Chinesische Tondachziegel

Chinese house roof

Chinese clay roof tile

A typical Chinese clay roof tile has a longitudinal curved surface.

It has a hard and smooth surface, mildly curved in such a way that water can run off easily.

The Traditional Bone Mouth Shar Pei has a "roof tile muzzle".

A toad mouth (depending on the translation also known as frog mouth) can be imagined as a shorter version of the roof tile muzzle, a roof tile has more or less parallel sides whereas a toad mouth (frog mouth) is a little triangular in shape.

Fang

Traditionell / Traditional

Muzzle

A good Traditional specimen has NO meat padding on top of the muzzle.

As the name "roof tile" implies, there should be a clear smooth curved surface on top of the muzzle, like any other normal dogs have, a clean surface at least at around 10:30 to 1:30 radius (position on the surface of a clock).

Also the over padding of the lips is not acceptable.

Rute

Chili / Hot pepper

Tail

The tail of a Traditional Bone Mouth Shar Pei is in Cantonese referred to as "Teet sheen mei" (Iron wire tail) or "Latjiu mei" (Hot pepper tail).

No matter how one describes the tail of a Traditional Bone Mouth Shar Pei, looking like a whip, metal wire or hot pepper,

the tail should have very short hair, not bushy, brushy or hairy and should end with a hairless tip.
